Every year due to trips out of state, lack of funds or summer school, I tend to miss the Legendary Roots Crew's annual festival at Penn's landing. The Roots Picnic is a day long concert with both upcoming and world renound artist performing all day long on two separate stages on Philly's own Festival pier. Fans both young and old come with blankets, shades and an expensive ticket to see the previously declared line ups perform through out the afternoon until... well, until Black Thought is done yelling "Can you dig it?" and Quest Love's drum sticks are quarrelled over after being flung into the ageless gathering of onlookers. Sadly, the line up was not as thorough as last year, but all of the acts that I saw did a great job at holding the stage. Whether it was their first time in front of a crowd of these numbers, or if their nickname was "nasty," mics were rocked as people enjoyed the cool breeze of the Delaware river waterfront. I had my camera throughout the day, so instead of listing the many performances I'm just going to throw up some photos that I captured while raging in the crowd.

The world famous drummer, Quest Love, accompanied many of the performers on his drum set. His on beat head movement was sometimes more entertaining then the artist.

Mr. Rose held it down on stage for all of the camo short weed smokers that attended the show. I can't lie though, I got hype when "In the Cut" was on. But Wiz couldn't hold the Roots-ready Philly crowd stage himself. After calling himself "A real n*gga," the crowd roared as members of the late great Roc-a-fella records walked on stage.

Young Chris and Neef of the Young Gunz reunited to perform their hit single "No Better Love." I yelled, "State Prop!" Like there was an "RW" embroidered on the back of my t-shirt.

The Broadstreet Bully and Philly Freeway romped on stage and performed a couple classics. "Roc the Mic" was a must perform. My mind wondered back to my 5th grade days when this was the go to track of Power 99. I almost hit a slight Harlem shake but someone was looking.

Wiz floated back onto the stage and finished up his set with a couple of tracks from his latest mixtape.

Peedi Crack (or is it Peedi Peedi?), made his way on stage during a medley of tracks performed by the Roots, and yes, he made it go "rling."

The moment I was waiting for. Nasir Jones, the Legend, the career ender, the role model for all of the MCs that call themselves MCs. He smoothly, toed his way on stage as the roots foreshadowed his arrival by playing a live band instrumental of "Get Down," from the God's Son album. With a double part swirled to the top of his dome, translucent shades and a slight smirk, Nastrodamous went in like this was his 9,000th time on stage. Quest Love remained on the drums during the whole Nas set as the Legends filled the city soundwaves with original, well-recognized lyrics and ferocious acoustics.

What suprised me the most was the number of tracks Prince Escobar did off of Illmatic, and other early albums. The only thing missing from the stage was the actual gun shots from "Made you look," and the one of a kind vocals of the soulful Lauryn hill. "If I ruled the woooooorld..." the festival pier recited as we filled in one of the more famous hooks for the larger than life MC.

When Mr. Jones was finshed he said, "thank you" and saluted the crowd as he bopped backstage knowing that he put on a show that would satisfy a true self proclaimed "hip-hop head."

The roots then took control of the stage again as Black thought took the mic and used strong sharp lyrics to put it to slow, painful death. The Roots reclaimed the show and made sure that everyone there understood that this was their picnic. Philly showed their world famous natives the love they deserved as they remixed classics, and consistantly made the crowd think the show was over. The entire band played their parts to perfection and line danced their way into the minds of every one at the concert. They planted a small seed in the heads of all, that will sprout next year when the performance line up is announced. This small seed will then remind fans to come back next year. Long live the Roots Crew.

Negativity garners, you guessed it, negative results. This lack of positive or constructive features in stressful and tough situations is, in fact, a natural reaction for most. So this would, in theory, make it somewhat acceptable to pout, rip off your shirt, or throw a chair through a window when something doesn’t go your way. Considering what I am about to tell you, anything of the sort, just isn’t acceptable.

Yes, I know what you are saying. With things being thrown at you on a daily basis, how is it possible to stay positive at all times? For many of us, this may seem like a difficult thing to grasp and though this may not be what you want to hear, I will let you know that it is. Who expects you to bear an assured and confident outlook on things when you just had seemingly the worst day of your life; one that consisted of failure, rejection, or whatever else may be keeping you out of the way of your goals? If no one else expects such, well… I do. ORCL is promoting a more positive outlook on life and encouraging the world to walk through the day, and night, with a permanent smile. Understand though, on the door which leads to the amazing, fun-filled, life you will lead after positivity reigns supreme, there is a large sign that reads: No Fretting Allowed.

I get the picture, VCU busted your already dismantled bracket and now there’s absolutely no way you will win the pool you entered at work. That’s fine. I understand, you were up until 4 a.m. writing a paper for a class you hate, knowing in the back of your mind that you had to be up at 9. No sweat. It may be difficult at times, but that big cheek to cheek smile can undoubtedly make things better. You don’t necessarily have to show all of your teeth, but hopefully you follow what I am saying. With this permanent smile, or positive mindset, things that were once difficult to get over and hard to understand may seem a lot more manageable and clear. Of course, there are those things in life that are truly hard to handle and challenging to deal with, but dwelling is never the answer. Things can always be a lot worse. Besides, dwelling will keep your attention on the negative. Honestly speaking, a fixed grin and negativity go together about as well as Rebecca Black and a track with no auto-tune.

So when life hands you lemons, what will you do? I know what I’m going to do. Dance. If the Cat Daddy is what it takes to keep me positive, it is just one of the steps I’m willing to take. Lame, but hey, who cares? A corny metaphor was in order and at this point in the blog post, no negative thought should manifest in that positive little head of yours. So make sure to carry that PERMANENT SMILE with you everywhere you go and hey, things might just turn out okay.

Blogs are the success and failure of almost every aspect of entertainment.  It amazes me how much a blog post from a person who fits the description of either a respected writer or  “dope” blogger can dramatically effect the most popular local talent or the least famous Hollywood star.  It doesn’t matter who you are, if found on the right blog your trip to fame will be smooth as buttah, baby.  I mean look at Rebecca Black and her basic, catchy, 30 million hit youtube single… (Excuse my tangent but: Does her face seem stiff or is just me?  I don’t mean to come at her like this, but really?  Whose man is that rapping in the video too?  Why is she famous?  I cannot tell if this is a joke or not.  She should be featured in the next Sun Drop commercial.  Were N’Sync and the Backstreet boys this whack to people who were my current age back then?  I don’t get it.  And if you saw the tweet that said orcl supports this chick, it was obviously not from me.  However, if you see a Penn student who can pass for Native American in some vintage Reeboks driving a Volvo SUV, don’t be surprised if he is cranking that Friday.)  But that’s not necessarily what I want to talk about.

I don’t want to go too in depth on the power of the popular blog, however I want to briefly touch on the blogs that are not read.  The ones that are there for your sphere of companions only.  The blogspots, occasional tumblrs or what have yous that actually have words in them.  No, not the fashion blogs that contain the self proclaimed fashion connoisseur’s most glamorous picture from her or his (if that’s how you bounce) Photobooth app.  But, the sometimes wordy, unattractive blogs that just depict life.  Not sneakers, not a reblog from Hypebeast, but exactly what the person is doing. On a regulary basis… When they’re just kickin’ it… Like an epic game of kick the can. These are the best post in my book.  Post that involve real life everyday people who aren’t glorifying their expensive objects or editing images of themselves to look like one of those guys.  Raw, natural, untampered with fun can never be shied upon.

When I first created a blog, I did it to document the trials and tribulations of me and the homies.  With the most advanced photography equipment at hand in my iPhone 3g, and a city full of memories on some bildungsroman type sh–stuff, nobody could tell me that my blog would not pop.  Filled with photos taken discreetly throughout the day my blog became a threshold of our foolishness and or whatever random thoughts that came to mind.  From random trips made to our summer getaway, to Dashiki infested Kid Cudi concerts, our times together were all posted on a regular basis.  I can’t lie, if you look through my blog you can find a lot of pictures via hypebeast or other popular blogs, but in the end it still is a direct reflection of me and the MHS grads, accompanied by a few other members of what we call the brothergood.

A prime example of a blog that magnifies the everyday thoughts of a group of friends can be found at coupdela.com.  This domain was created by my roommate and his friends from his beloved South Jersey area.  He and his friends remind me of me and my hermanos.  We’re all in different places but we still remain tight not only to handle business, but simply because we have that type of bond.  You should give their site a look and don’t be scared to actually read their post.

In the meantime we’re going to bring this blog back to life with the type of content that I just described.  You can’t go wrong when you’re being yourselves.

Only the complex, time consuming thoughts are the ones that magnify her smile. These thoughts don’t come until all of the basic ideas are marked off with the sharpie labeled “average t shirt brand” The thought out ideas that promote her features are the ones that make her beauty incomparable. These ideas enable a clothing line to take a place on the margin, while the others compete in a center that is concentrated in basicness. Due to the fact that we know we are capable of being the best at whatever we put our minds to, we decided to start doing things differently.

I discovered a nice hole in my starting line up of classes and decided to let a post get some time on the clock.  I will be blunt with you and tell you that I forgot what I wanted to post about.  Every now and then a topic comes to mind and I tell myself, “Damn, that would be a good topic to write about.”  Then ten minutes go by and I completely forgot what I was going to scribe in this wordpress box.  Nonetheless, I am sitting here with a head full of thoughts and I will probably know what I want to write about by the time I get to this period.  Success.

Today I turned my iTunes on after returning to my dorm room and listened to several specific tracks before I let my iTunes do it’s shuffle business like the smoothest dealer at Trump Plaza.  There is always those selected songs that come to my mind as soon as I think of what I want to listen to.  These are the “go to” tracks that I will play when someone passes me an iTrip and says, “Play some music” as I’m riding shot gun in a car full of people with starving ears.  These lovely mp3s are songs that would most likely be featured on a play list that reflected me.  Tracks such as these may not tickle the fancy of you or your friends, but I know they cater to moments in my life that are witnessed daily like your favorite Saturday morning worshipers.  The music that I speak of might be found on a blog that involves my “slanted view” (I know some of you got a kick out of that, smh) or in a single mothers disc drive as she heads to a dinner for two.  When a song grows on me it is a good chance that it can be found in this personal category of music and later added to the infinite play list that grows with life experience. I feel like that was a fair description, so I’ll give you a sample of what I am talking about.  Here it is:

The pressure is on. It is me you and two others on a long road trip.  The ride has been silent for several hours after an argument about whether Ronald McDonald is a man or clown came to a screeching halt.  You throw your 32gig ipod touch, filled with all of the music you could immediately think of, up to the front seat.  I plug the iPod into the head phone port, and what do I do?

I PLAY KEVIN HART’S SERIOUSLY FUNNY STAND UP FOR A 17TH TIME. (Look at my eyes…. ROLL ‘EM!!!)

No, I’m joking.  But what do I really do? (I’m strictly going with whatever comes to my mind first…)  I play:

1.

DTA (feat. Tyler, the Creator) – Casey Veggies

I would play this first simply because it is somewhat current. Plus it is accompanied by a beat that you cannot refuse. These are new faces to the rap game and I tend to like the young California talent as some of you may see in my iPod, word to Dom Kennedy. Mr. Veggies and Tyler, the Creator are definitely on the come up, so do not be surprised if you here about a young artist "sleeping in class" or a remotely deep voice attacking nuns, showing affection to dolls but doing it in lyrical unique, not give-a-kcuf manner.

After hearing the vulgarity in Tyler’s verse, I would play something so one of the ladies in the vehicle would stop complaining.  So I scroll down to Young Money’s own… Aubrey Graham.

A Little Bit (feat. Lykke Li) – Drake

Ladies love Drake and even though they may not admit it, the fellas do too. This is a favorite track from one of the most amazing mix tapes of the past decade. The mix tape that introduced the new generation of the MC. The melodic lyricist that can hold a tune, but still feed well seasoned bars to the starving hip hop heads. The feature on this track is a great one in Lykke Li. One that allows me to bring in any other alternative genre without surprising the listeners in the car too much (because I tend to do that... especially down here where Gucci Mane is King).

Hit it in the Morning (featuring Drake) – J. Cole

"Baaaaby, canIhititinthemorniiing" This is an obvious track to play (in my mind) in regards to the latter. This song is smooth and keeps the mood nice and laid back. It may produce mental imagery of a certain someone that you spent a long morning with. Who knows. Regardless, this song gives off one of my favorite vibes that I will leave unnamed because it is hard to describe. It's a Cole world out here.

I Gotcha – Lupe Fiasco

This is a song that you recognize as soon as the beat drops. This fierce, creative track is one of my favorite by Lupe. I get excited when this track comes on, so excuse the severe head nod to all eight "rights" in the hook. As we say in Philly, I might have to "drawl" before I play this song by maximizing the volume right before the beat drops. The base might just make every other person in the car flinch. My friends and I would think that was funny. However, you might not. Next track. (To be honest I would probably play a few more Lupe tracks such as Sunshine and Gold Watch, but let us save that for another ride.)

As I pick the next song, I’ll need a brief interlude.

Wind(terlude) – Blu

My favorite track off of a favorite mixtape. This is a fork in the road. The reaction I get from this song will determine the next song. By the way, don't you love this album artwork though? Blu is a great MC who I tend to relate to in much of his work. With the crazy voice samples and drawn out acoustics this is a mix tape that can lay yo' head down like Lloyd with Patti on the remix. Don't sleep.

Let’s say they like it.

The Sunshine  – Mikey Rocks

One half of the cool kids. A slow more mellow side of the Chicago native. My type of music (for the most part). I Couldn't find any album artwork. Sorry. However, this track a long with Batphone and a couple other singles have caused me to open my ears to a sound that I did not think Mr. Rocks was capable of providing.

Hey Ma – Cam’ron

I'm a Dipset head for life. Free Max B. I always insert some Cam'ron into my playlist when I'm transit DJ. Cam is on my top ten of all time. Yes, I said it. Save the side eye and the argument because I am sticking to my opinion. He is a trendsetter who started one of the most powerful movements in the bling era of hip hop. Hey Ma is a classic track that would have everyone in the car singing in unison. I'm twenty, and I live a crazy life by the way.

I Wanna Love You Girl (Feat. Pharrell) – Robin Thicke

The beat of this song is addicting. It's play count in my iTunes Library is serious. A. Must. Play.

A beautiful beat. People sleep on all of the great samples that come from Dilla. Everyone in the car would shout, "Yo, I love this song. Drake killed this –– Oh." Dilla was amazing.

Classic. Classic. Classic. Name a person who doesn't like this song? This is possibly the smoothest song in existance. The hook, the lyical content, and the Quest Love solo at the end allows this song to make any play list. This is a great representation of the city we love.

Something About Us – Daft Punk

This song might be played when everyone is half sleep with the exception of the driver, hopefully. This song provides a smooth old school feel that depicts the versatility of this legendary duo. Don't let the robotic look fool you, Daft has classics.

Hola Hovito.

Girls, girls, girls – Jay-Z

This is in my opinion, Jay-Z's most well put together single. Every line and verse came together like Voltron, and assembled one of the most steadily-on-topic rap songs ever. This is music. Not to mention the impeccable instrumental that makes the song what it is. Can you name a Jay track that goes harder than this? Maybe the Hova that was around prior to The Blueprint had an edge over this song. You know the Sean Carter that was Feelin' It in loud tuxedos around blunt filled Roc-a-fella tables. Either way, this track can get an instant play in any vehicle ranging from a monster truck in the dirt mounds of West Virginia, to the secret service vehicle that you might find President Obama in. The man has Oprah behind him, so his fan base is unlimited. Other "Go to" Jay-Z tracks that I might play would be Maybe and of course Party Life. Side note: If you leave your number as a comment I would be sure to copy, and paste in my iPhone fo'.

The most playful track you can find by the Clipse. There is nothing like these lyric slinging twins on a signature Neptunes beat. Not too much talk of the "yayo" or "hard white" in this single from their first album. This was a smooth change in subject matter that showed their fanbase that they're not just about the bricks.

I don’t want to stop, but I have come to the conclusion that I could go on and on with this.  Here is one last…

Disperse – Consequence

Slept on like a mattress and bed risers. Consequence that is. Disperse is a feel good track that I can listen to at any time of day and still get the same result. This song never gets old to me. This could easily be a song that fades into play on any iHome found at bedside when it is time to start your day. I would not get through a long drive without hearing this song once.

Other than that I’m just glad this semester is almost over although it seemed to fly by. PSU has provided some good times and all that good stuff as usual but I’m ready for a little break and some laughs from The Brothergood.

We are working hard and working better to bring you the best of us. This next collection will be right. Take that however you want, we’re just trying to break down barrier after barrier. Back to your regularly scheduled logistics.

With that being said, we try to make the best of all the free time we have (even if it isn’t at our own Universities).  When I am not on the tennis court, in the class, or in the books, I try my best to be on the road or around the people I’m closest to.  We’re at the age now where a trip out of state isn’t hard to come by, so why not visit your friends at other schools? Whether you have to book tickets, car pool, bike, hike or two step, make moves. Life is short.

This weekend I Amtrak-ed my way to the District of Columbia to meet up with some of the posse and visit my friend Brooke at Georgetown U.  We showed ourselves a good time, and she showed us a great time around the area on her study breaks.  Away from the monuments and iconic government infested area, the go-go heads, and the Hampton Howard rivalry, I got to see a different side of D.C.  As we marched down M street and drove around the nation’s capital, making sure pedestrians knew what we were listening to, I finally caught the vibe that all my D.C friends talk about.  The city has much to offer, you just have to find it.  I wasn’t too impressed with my first few stays in D.C, but after this last visit I feel like I will be going there for reasons other than a connecting bus to Philly.

Then again, maybe it was just the beautiful weather this weekend…

Not too many words are required. The silence is invigorating.

The New Standard.

I leave for Hampton U this upcoming Sunday, so I am taking this week (to attempt) to see everyone I did not get a chance to chill with, while running some procrastinated back to school errands before I hit route thirteen.  This summer was what I see as a foreshadow of years to come.  For the first time, I can actually see my friends as semi-adults.  No lie, it is freaking me out to know that we are all either collegiate or on the street doing for ourselves these days.  I definitely miss the days of lunch on the skyline backed Masterman roof, mixed with a hardcore game of round ball to leave you perfectly drenched just in time for your fourth period class. Man, those were the days.  Back when our worries stemmed from subtle things that did not really matter (especially now) because we all knew we would graduate.  Graduation was a long term goal for so long, that it is almost surreal to be a sophomore at a University.  Our long term goals were set in stone by the time we entered Pre-K.  But now that we have tossed our caps, and filled out FAFSAs,  in all honesty (right hand up, no left fingers crossed) how many of us have efficient long term goals?  If you do, more power to you, but in reality, many of us are clueless (no Stacy) of how life will be five years from now.  It’s scary, but potentially rewarding.

It’s like we have entered a hallway filled with infinite doors and we only have a handful of keys.  These doors lead to negative and or positive, some are unlocked and labeled “must open”, while others are simply stumbled upon with the right key.  At this point carefulness is helpful but forward motion is mandatory.  No matter how you approach these units of entry, you will still meet the experience that each door you open posses.  The goal is to find as many doors as you can that will lead to the life that you want to live.  The hard part is matching the right key, with the right doors…

Drop the beat though, this post is about to be a freestyle in dedication to one of the greatest… I’m going in.

This blog has some dust on it from the lack of updates, so I figured it’s time to get the Swiffer out.  How’s your summer been? Mine has been mighty fine, thanks for asking.  Subject matter in this post? Whatever comes to my mind right now. I’d like to thank you for tuning into the ORCL blog, and continuing to support.  Every click is beautiful.

But, eureka… A topic came to mind as I was typing the close parenthesis in a previous sentence. It regards “ORIGINALITY.”  What is it? How do you get it? Why is it such a hot topic in my generation?  In my opinion, it’s ALL opinion.  But nonetheless, I’ll give my spiel on the topic and how it relates to Only Right Clothing Line and what we’re trying to accomplish here.  Once again, this is an off the top of the dome, raw, unauthorized freestyle.

Basically,

Every writer, designer, artist, scientist, entertainer, student, professor or creator comes across the idea of being original.  I’ve even thought about it since I decided on a topic for this post.  After centuries of of creativity how can one remain creative without “biting” off of another person? With millions of people attempting to sky rocket into fame for their uniqueness, how can a fresh new look, idea or image even exist? Secondly, if someone does find something new to separate themselves, will it be respected? These are all questions people might think about as they try to find a stable place on the margin while the rest of the world moves around the center (Shout out to my high school English teacher, Ms. Avelin, I use the “margin vs. center” comparison on a regular)

But Anyway, here is my spiel on the matter:

Do what you like (point _____ .)

That is the best advice I could give anyone.  Even though I might not follow my own advice as much as I would like to (by letting outside opinions affect me), I still believe it is the way to go. Whether you like designing clothes or buildings, wood crafts or ear muffs, do what you prefer and you cannot go wrong.  If you like Polo, and taking pictures with your hand on your head and eyes  slightly squinted in your bathroom mirror, snap away.  Because if you look at what originality is under a microscope, you may conclude that it is AUTOMATIC.  Well, that is how I see it.

It is impossible for someone to interpret life as you do.  So what is original to one person might be played out to another.  Your life experiences build your mind faster and no one else in the entire universe can share the same outlook as you.  You could have a Siamese twin for a life time, but your interpretation, thoughts, decisions and general attitude would still be very different because you both possess separate minds each accompanied by two different pairs of eye balls.

ORCL is something that we started to reflect each other.  We want to mirror my friends, your friends and whomever does or does not support us in the Philadelphia region.   When it comes to originality, one might say we’re not original because there are thousands of brands out there trying to make a name for themselves with an origin based on t-shirts.  However, we’re doing us so that alone gives us all the originality we need.  We are not trying to be better than anyone nor are we in this for the money. We’re just trying to exploit the vibe that this city of brotherly love has provided us for all these years. This vibe that I was raised on might be seen differently to others who came up in Philly. Although, through the eyes of my friends and I, this vibe is a positive one.

Hope you understood what I was trying to say.  Yet, to reiterate my point, you might have interpreted it differently just because we don’t have the same thoughts.  Yamshayin’?

Originality is the mind of the beholder.

Things are quickly changing and it couldn’t be more fun like the mighty power rangers are. Recently we were invited to listen to the live sounds of J. Cole and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the TLA courtesy of Heineken’s Inspire tour, and with the utmost honesty we can say that it was our first event of this nature. We were accompanied by other respectable brands and move-makers alike so it’s a bewildering experience to be thrown into, considering our embryonic state in this “game”. We’re expanding our friend base, and mixing our circles. It’s not always about sparking up business matters and being in the lead as far as moves made, sometimes it’s just about a connection. Enjoying the company of the folks who you have something in common with, and if not then finding a middle ground where you can speak on. Venn Diagrams.

A head nod here, positive glance there, and handshakes all around like tremors. It’s all love, and at the end of the day… it’s tomorrow. Sike, just jokes. At the end of the day, we’re all striving for our own triumphs so positivity just needs to ricochet as much as possible around these parts. Our Life Itself posts are designed to show you the process and hiding the changes we go through only pushes you away. Allow us to get better and grow, just so we’ll share many stories down the road of how the good ol’ innocent days were.

As far as summations go, times are just peachy and I’m at a loss for cliche-inspirational words. Thanks to everyone who made that event possible, summer is only making sense these days. Yemsh?

And in addition to all of this, same day midnight excursions to the rather large apple looking for rooftops just make the festivities that much more interesting. It might have cost astronomical amounts for gas, considering we were there for only 4 hours, but oh well… it was certainly worth it. Constantly crafting memories.
